    THE FUNERAL OF
    CONFEDERATE GENERAL NATHAN BEDFORD FORREST
    Took place at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church,
    Memphis, Tennessee on October 31, 1877
    General Forrest lay in the residence of the last survivor of the
    Forrest brothers, Colonel Jesse Forrest.
    The cortege was in the following order: Marshals, Ex-Confederates on horseback,
    Arnold’s Band, Chickasaw Guards, Bluff City Greys, Bluff City Light Guards,
    Memphis Encampment I.O.O.F., other lodges of I.O.O.F., Pall Bearers, Hearse,
    Family and Relatives, Detachment of Police, City Firemen, Mayor
    and General Council, Ex-Confederates on Foot, Long Line of Carriages.
    The procession extended for eight squares and moved amid a roll of drums and
    firing of cannon to Elmwood Cemetery.
    The pall bearers were Honorable Jefferson Davis, Honorable Jacob Thompson,
    Governor James D. Porter, Colonel M.C. Gallaway, Major G.V. Rambaut,
    Mr. John A. Holt, Captain R.A. Burton, Captain R.J. Black,
    Captain Sam J. Donelson, Mr. F.W. Smith, Captain Thomas Bacon,
    Judge R.J. Morgan, and Dr. J.B. Cowan.
    He was lowered to his last resting place in Elmwood Cemetery.
